 A Sacred Symbol of Buddhism

The Sri Maha Bodhi, located in Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka, is one of the most sacred and historically significant sites in Buddhism. It is a revered symbol of enlightenment and a place of immense spiritual value for Buddhists worldwide. The tree, a direct descendant of the Bodhi tree under which the Buddha attained enlightenment, is the oldest historically documented tree in the world, with a continuous record of its existence for over 2,300 years.


Historical Significance

The Sri Maha Bodhi was brought to Sri Lanka in the 3rd century BCE by Sangamitta Theri, the daughter of Emperor Ashoka of India and a prominent Buddhist nun. She carried a sampling of the original Bodhi tree in Bodh Gaya, India, as a gesture to spread Buddhism in Sri Lanka.

King Devanampiya Tissa, the ruler of Sri Lanka at the time, planted the sapling in the Mahameghavana Gardens in Anuradhapura. Since then, the tree has been continuously tended to by generations of Buddhist monks and devotees, becoming a central site for worship and pilgrimage.

Religious Importance

For Buddhists, the Sri Maha Bodhi represents the presence of the Buddha and serves as a symbol of his enlightenment. Pilgrims visit the site to meditate, make offerings, and seek blessings. Worship rituals include:

Lighting oil lamps: Symbolizing enlightenment and wisdom.

Offering flowers: As a gesture of reverence.

Tying prayer flags: To convey wishes and prayers.

The tree is surrounded by protective walls built during different periods to safeguard it from natural and human threats.
